Hard Mode Guide — the 60-Level Endgame & All 6 Modifiers (1.0)
Sephiria 1.0 / Updated: August 11, 2026Hard Mode is Sephiria's endgame challenge — expanded to level 60 at the 1.0 launch on July 31, 2026, with 6 modifiers that change how every run plays. It's the post-ending arc: beat the game, climb again against a harder tower, and push your builds to their ceiling.
How to Unlock Hard Mode
Hard Mode unlocks after you complete the base game — finish a full climb through all 6 chapters and the Chapter 6 ending (the final boss + credits). Once unlocked, you can select Hard Mode when starting a run.
- Why do it? Hard Mode is the current endgame: the 6 modifiers, the level 60 arc, and the highest-tier challenge the game offers. The story itself is already complete at Chapter 6 — Hard Mode is for the climb, not new story.
- Difficulty affects nothing story-wise: the ending unlocks on any difficulty. Hard Mode is purely the challenge-and-rewards ladder.
What Changes in Hard Mode (1.0)
The Level 60 Arc
- The climb now runs to level 60 (vs. the base-game cap), with higher defense-tree upgrade caps to match.
- Hard Mode adds 6 modifiers on top of the base difficulty — they're the real content, so this guide is built around them.
The 6 Modifiers
| Modifier | Type | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| ---------- | ------ | -------- |
| Festival of Blood | Demon | Enemies lifesteal — healing scales with party size |
| Pseudo-Vanguard | Demon | Elite enemies gain vanguard-style buffs |
| Decline | Plan | Progressive pressure over the climb |
| Tension | Plan | No potions in boss fights |
| Heavy Heart | Plan | You carry junk artifacts |
| Proliferation | World | Enemies multiply/scale world-wide |
The Modifier Counter-Guide
Festival of Blood — Lifesteal
Enemies heal on hit. This punishes trading and rewards range.
- Best answer: the Crossbow — the community calls it "the safest pick for Hard Mode." Distance beats lifesteal outright.
- If you're melee: stagger before you trade (Greatsword) or block the hits (Sword & Shield) so enemies never actually land the lifesteal attack.
Pseudo-Vanguard — Buffed Elites
Elites arrive with extra buffs. They're the priority target in every room.
- Kill them first, at range when possible — a vanguard elite left alone buffs the whole room.
- Greatsword stagger chains shut elites down before their buffs activate.
Decline — Progressive Pressure
Runs grind you down over time. Sustain matters.
- Lean on tablet/artifact passives over consumables; see the Mystic Pot Guide for curating that pool.
- Efficient routes > thorough routes — Decline punishes over-farming.
Tension — No Potions in Boss Fights
The single most punishing modifier. Your health bar is final in every boss room.
- Prep before the boss room: full health, best artifacts equipped, nothing on cooldown.
- The final boss on Hard is dramatically harder under Tension — the Chapter 6 ending fight with no potions is the hardest content in the game. Learn the patterns on Normal first (Chapter 6 & Final Boss Guide).
- Weapons with natural defense — Sword & Shield's block, Crossbow's range — are the answers.
Heavy Heart — Junk Artifacts
You're forced to carry junk artifacts. This taxes your inventory and your build.
- Skip artifact pickups that don't fit your element — every carried junk artifact is dead weight.
- Feed the junk to the Mystic Pot when you can: same-rarity re-rolls turn dead artifacts into rolls you might use.
Proliferation — Scaling World
Enemies scale world-wide. The climb snowballs — the late levels hit hardest.
- Don't lag on upgrade opportunities; the new weapon upgrade lines exist precisely for this.
- Co-op helps: more players = more coverage.
Best Weapons & Builds for Hard Mode
| For | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| ----- | ------ | ----- |
| Safest overall | Crossbow | Range beats lifesteal; the community's Hard Mode pick — full build: Crossbow Build Guide |
| Consistent all-rounder | Sword & Shield | Block replaces the potions Tension takes away; no bad matchups |
| Boss fights | Greatsword | Stagger chains interrupt the no-potion boss fights — Greatsword Build Guide |
| Element ceiling | Staff | Highest output with the right tablets; fragile under Tension — Staff Build Guide |
- Tablets and artifacts decide more than the weapon — match your element direction and curate it at the Mystic Pot (2-for-1 rarity upgrades are the fastest power growth).
- Respect Tension: no potions in boss fights means defense passives, not consumables, are your safety net.
- Learn patterns on Normal first — the bosses' telegraphed attacks are learnable; go in knowing them.
- Don't get hit. It's trite, but Festival of Blood + Tension make it the actual strategy.
Rewards & What Comes After
- The reward is the climb itself — the 60-level arc, the higher defense-tree caps, and the bragging rights of a Hard Mode clear.
- The endgame continues: artifact re-rolling at the Mystic Pot, Gauntlet Mode score chasing, and weapon mastery grinding (see the Endgame Guide).
- Post-launch support is ongoing — balance changes and new content are expected. Watch Steam News for patch notes.
