Sephiria Costume Stats & Character Unlock Guide — How to Unlock Every Costume and Which One to Pick

Sephiria costumes are not cosmetics — each one is a class with real stat bonuses and penalties that last the whole run. Here is what all 8 starter costumes actually do, how to unlock the hidden ones (Frog, Ghost, Wingless Bat, White Wolf and more), which to pick for your build, and where the community lists disagree.

v1.0Updated: 2026-09-12
Costumes in Sephiria are not skins. Each one is effectively a class: pick it in the tower-top village before a run and it changes your stats — and often your whole build — for the entire climb. That is not community folklore: the developers' own 1.0.33 patch notes (September 11, 2026) contain a Costumes section reading "Fixed an issue where the costume effect could be removed by a certain weapon." The phrase "the costume effect" is theirs. [Official]

This guide covers what each costume actually does, how the hidden ones unlock, which to pick, and — importantly — where the published lists disagree so you can verify in-game instead of trusting a number.

The short answer

  • Eight costumes are available from your first run. They are not sidegrades with flavour text; each pairs a bonus with a penalty.
  • At least ten more unlock through gameplay — stat thresholds, one-run challenges, boss repetitions and random events.
  • There is no "best" costume, because every one gives and takes. The right question is which penalty can my build absorb.
  • You choose before the run, so the costume is the first build decision you make, not the last.

How to change your costume

Equip it in the village at the top of the tower (the hub) before you descend. The effect is fixed for that run — you cannot swap mid-climb. Because the mods are permanent for the run, treat costume choice as step zero of build planning, before you know which artifacts you will be offered. [Editorial]

The 8 starter costumes and their stats

These eight are unlocked on a new save. The stat lines below are the ones the English guides agree on exactly.

CostumeEffectBest for
Pink BunnyExperience gained +3%Nothing specific — a pure progression pick
Armored Bunny+10 Defense, −15 Max HPTanky, block-heavy builds that never dodge
Brown Rabbit+6% Evasion, −6% Crit ChanceLearning the game — the evasion is worth more than the crit you lose
Braided Hair Rabbit+7% Attack Speed, +12% Move Speed, −20% Dash RecoveryFast, aggressive play; the dash penalty is the price
Orange Rabbit+10 Max HP, −15 Max MPMelee builds that rarely cast
Red-Hooded Rabbit+8 MP Regen, −20 Max MPSpell-heavy runs that want throughput over a big pool
White Rabbit+10 Barter, −5% EvasionEconomy and shop value over survivability
Wing-Eared RabbitBuffs allies within 5 tiles, ally revive time −30%, spell MP cost +50%, Weapon Attack −10%; starts with Blessing GrimoireExplicitly a co-op support pick

Two of these are the community's standard beginner recommendations: Brown Rabbit for forgiveness while you learn combat flow, and Braided Hair Rabbit if you already play fast. [Community / Editorial]

The Wing-Eared Rabbit is the only starter built for team play — it is the one costume whose main effect does nothing at all in a solo run. [Editorial]

Unlockable costumes and how to get them

These are the hidden tier. Unlock conditions are consistent across sources; the effects are not, so each row notes the agreement level.

White WolfDefeat the Chapter 1 pillager leader more than 5 times — spelled Rataka in the English guides and Lataka on the Korean wiki [Unconfirmed]Infinite dashes, but dashes no longer grant invincibility frames
SkeletonTake 333 cumulative damage in one runSurvivability gimmick — sources disagree on the exact effect [Unconfirmed]
Wingless BatComplete the Blood Donation event 5 timesLifesteal bonus, dash count fixed at 1
GhostHold 5 Grimoires in one runGrimoires cost no MP, Weapon Damage −40%
OtterReach 175% Crit Damage+9 Crit Chance, movement-speed penalty

Watch out for three rows

  • White Wolf is the cleanest data point in the table — the English and Chinese lists agree word for word: infinite dashes, no i-frames. For any build that uses dash as a defensive tool this is a downgrade, not an upgrade. [Editorial]
  • Wingless Bat is the one players complain about most, because its unlock is gated behind a random event. One Steam reviewer reported roughly 80 hours without completing five Blood Donation events; a community description of the same event places it at an Iron Maiden in a special room on an early floor, traded to a wandering NPC in exchange for health. If you are hunting it, that is the thing to look for. [Community]
  • The White Rabbit does not match across languages. The English guides list Barter and Evasion; the Chinese listing gives special-attack damage, Max MP and an Evasion penalty instead. One of the two lists is describing a different build. Check the in-game wardrobe rather than trusting either. [Unconfirmed]

How many costumes are there, really?

The Chinese full listing counts 27, and names entries the English guides do not cover at all — Crocodile, Deer, Eagle, Lucky Fairy, Farmer Squirrel, Forest Cat, Scholar Lizard and Turtle. Scholar Lizard is corroborated: it is the costume named in the official 1.0.33 notes. [Official / Editorial] Treat any specific total as approximate — the wardrobe in game is the authority, and it hides costumes you have not unlocked yet, so an apparent "empty slot" is normal. [Community]

Which costume should you pick?

  • First playthrough: Brown Rabbit. Evasion shortens your death spiral while you learn boss patterns; the crit penalty is the least painful stat to lose early. [Community]
  • Aggressive melee: Braided Hair Rabbit if you can live with the dash recovery, otherwise Armored Bunny to trade Max HP for flat defense.
  • Caster / Staff runs: Red-Hooded Rabbit for regen, or Wizard Bunny / Frog / Red-Clothed Cat to lean into one element once you can hit the threshold.
  • Co-op support: Wing-Eared Rabbit. Nothing else in the starter set helps the team.
  • Dash-reliant builds: anything except White Wolf — losing dash i-frames changes what the dodge button means.

FAQ

Q: Do costumes change your stats?

Yes. They are functional classes, and the developers' own patch notes refer to "the costume effect." Older summaries describing costumes as purely cosmetic are out of date. [Official]

Q: Can I swap costumes during a run?

No — you equip in the hub before descending, and the modifiers hold for the whole climb.

Q: Do I have to re-unlock costumes on a new save?

No. Unlocks are account-wide once earned, so a fresh save starts with everything you have already opened. [Editorial]

Q: Why can't I see a costume in the menu?

Locked costumes can stay hidden rather than showing a silhouette, which is why players hunting the Wingless Bat describe an apparently empty slot. [Community]

Q: Is the Wing-Eared Rabbit worth it solo?

No. Its headline effect buffs nearby allies and reduces revive time — with no allies in the room, you are paying the spell-cost and weapon-damage penalties for the starting Grimoire alone.

Official: The Steam announcements for Sephiria (app 2436940) treat Costumes as a first-class system with gameplay effects. The 1.0.33 Update, posted September 11, 2026, carries a dedicated [Costumes] section whose only entry is 'Scholar Lizard — Fixed an issue where the costume effect could be removed by a certain weapon.' The 1.0.31 Update, posted September 10, 2026, includes 'Fixed an issue where a certain costume could not be unlocked in Chapter 1.' Both are improvements the developers mark with a carrot icon for community feedback. The wording 'the costume effect' is the developers' own: costumes in Sephiria carry functional effects, not appearance only. The official Steam store description lists the systems as artifacts/tablets, 6 weapons with over 50 upgrades, 60+ enemies, 10+ bosses, 6 chapters and 4-player online co-op; costumes are documented in the update notes rather than the store blurb

Community: Steam reviews for app 2436940 describe costumes behaving as classes with trade-offs rather than as skins. A highly-rated review (August 7, 2026) states that costumes carry a set bonus with huge downsides, and that picking the ice-wizard costume commits you to that build or you will not beat the run. Another (August 24, 2026) reports that after nearly 80 hours the bat costume still could not be unlocked because Blood Donation events are rare. A September 11, 2026 review describes unlocking other animals beyond the starting bunny. A Steam Community guide (『赛菲莉娅』成就角色, sharedfiles id 3461710959) tracks costume unlocks against the achievement list

Editorial: The per-costume stat lines and unlock conditions below are compiled from four independent English guides published for the 1.0 build — ProdigyGamers (August 6, 2026, 'Costume Guide: How to Unlock Every Class & Stats'), Last Word on Gaming (August 6, 2026, 'Costumes Guide — All Character Unlocks'), All Things How ('How to Unlock Every Costume and What Each One Does') and Destructoid ('All costumes in Sephiria 1.0 and how to unlock them') — cross-checked against a Chinese-language full listing credited to Ali213 and republished by DVG on August 13, 2026, which documents 27 costumes. The English sources agree exactly on the eight starter costumes. For the unlockable tier the English and Chinese lists diverge on several stat values (Otter's move-speed penalty, Wingless Bat's lifesteal value, the Skeleton's effect, and the White Rabbit entirely); where they diverge we say so in the text instead of picking a winner. Two guides (ProGameGuides, Roonby) recommend Brown Rabbit and Braided Hair Rabbit for new players. Costume counts in the third-party lists range from 19 named to 27 total, so treat any count as approximate and the in-game wardrobe as authoritative. One further check: the boss whose repeated defeats unlock the White Wolf is written 'Rataka' in the English guides but 'Lataka' (Marauder leader) on the Korean community wiki en.namu.wiki/w/세피리아/보스 — the two are the same fight under two romanisations, which is why that row carries an [Unconfirmed] marker rather than a single spelling. Nothing here is restated from a single source without a marker
